Chair Yoga Series

April 4 @ 10:30 am - 11:45 am

Chair Yoga Series

When we say, "If you can breath, you can do yoga", we mean it!

If mobility issues are preventing you from fully enjoying our regular drop in classes–or if you just think it would be fun–chair yoga is for you!

This is a form of yoga that is practiced sitting on a chair or standing using a chair for support.

Using a chair allows REAL people to do REAL yoga.

While this class is more accessible than a “regular” yoga class,  it is not “dumbed down”.

You will leave class with a calm mind, clear head, and feeling like you worked your body in a therapeutic way.

Six Reasons to Participate in Chair Yoga

Increase Strength

Body strength enables us to withstand falls and injury and helps us with balance.

Reduce Joint Strain

Chair yoga reduces the strain on joints and muscles, which allows someone who is unable to stand for traditional yoga an opportunity to practice too

Improve Concentration

Incorporating breath work with the postures helps clear the mind of unwanted thoughts, improve mood and decrease stress.

Experience Relaxation

Relaxation is a skill. We tend to assume that we are not relaxed because the circumstances of our lives are too stressful. We may tell ourselves that we will relax after the mortgage is paid or after a family member completes chemotherapy. The truth is that everyone’s life always contains some tension-inducing problems. So we must learn how to relax.

Reduce or Even Eliminate Insomnia, Arthritis and Constipation

Many chair yoga participants report that after one to three months of regular weekly classes, they sleep better at night. Some students who previously experienced chronic constipation have more regular bowel movements without medication. Pains from arthritis, sciatica, chronic back ache and other conditions also tend to decrease or in some cases even disappear with yoga practice.

Connect with Other People

Several studies have shown the following benfits to staying active and connected to others:

  • You may live longer – staying connected may have overall health benefits.
  • Your physical health may be better – socialization may help build a stronger immune system.
  • Better mental health – Interacting with others lightens your mood and feelings of depression may decrease.
  • You may lower risk of dementia – socializing is good for your brain health.

Studio Guidelines

  • Leave outdoor shoes by the front door.
    • If you must wear shoes, please bring a clean pair of indoor-only shoes and change when you arrive.
    • If you must wear socks, make sure they have grips on the bottom so you don’t slip.
  • Have cell phones off  – even if you are leaving them in the lobby.

  • Enter the practice space mindfully,
    • Place your mat on the floor in way that won’t startle anyone.
    • Keep social conversations very quiet or save them for the lobby area.
  • If you arrive late:
    • Wait until any quiet, centering activities have finished before entering the classroom.
  • Keep personal belongings in the studio to a minimum.
  • Do not leave your glasses on the floor.

  • Avoid unnecessary props around your mat.

  • Avoid interrupting the instructor unless he/she has specifically invited you to do so  – or it is an emergency.
  • Wash  yoga clothes in unscented laundry detergent and refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, or strong essential oils.  Many students are allergic to or sickened by the smell of the artificial fragrances in commercial detergent or other strong odors.
