5 Easy Steps to a More Peaceful Life
Find a place to sit where distractions will be at a minimum.
This is easier for some of us than others. Maybe you will choose to hide in a closet or go to the library. Be creative. It will be easier to meditate if you can keep outside distractions down to a minimum.
Sitting in a chair with your feet planted on the floor is a great way to meditate. If you don’t need to lean back, sit forward a little bit with your feet planted on the floor. Your hands can rest on your thighs or wherever it is comfortable for you.
Some people choose to sit on the floor. This is fine as long as it is comfortable.
If sitting isn’t comfortable, there is no reason you can’t lie down. Meditation isn’t often taught that way because it’s really easy to fall asleep if you are reclining, but there is no other reason not to do it.
Take a moment to see if there is anything you could do to be 10% more comfortable. If there is, go ahead and do it.
That might mean getting a sweater, shawl, or blanket to keep warm. Or maybe you want a cushion to sit more comfortably.
If you are comfortable closing your eyes, go ahead and do so. Or you might choose to set your gaze softly towards your lap or the floor.
Pay attention to your breath. When you are ready, start counting your breathes. Start counting at 1 and count up to 20.
If you mind wanders, this is to be expected. It is your mind’s job to think. If you’ve lost count, just go back to 1 and start again.
You did it!
Take a moment to notice any calming effects this practice might have had for you.
The more you do this simple, short practice, the more results you will notice.
